Uzbekistan, Church leaders sentenced |
The oppression facing evangelical churches in Uzbekistan continues to grow. Uzbekistan handed down 15-day sentences for three Protestant Christians from a registered church. Three others, arrested after a raid on the Tashkent church, were each fined 80 times the minimum monthly wage. Two other Protestants were fined five times the minimum monthly wage. Gao is alive -- but still not free |
Following international pressure, confirmation has come from China that human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng is alive. Gao, who defended house church leaders, was abducted by the authorities in 2009. The Voice of the Martyrs Canada partners Release International and China Aid along with Christian Solidarity Worldwide hosted a joint news conference in London to keep up the pressure on China. Bob Fu of China Aid spoke at the news conference. Several days later, news came that Gao was still alive.
